Navratri is around the corner, and across the UK people are digging out their chaniya cholis and kediyus. But if you’ve ever stood at the edge of a Garba circle wondering how everyone knows the steps, you’re not alone. That’s exactly why Sumeet’s Step2Step runs a beginner Garba workshop UK dancers love every year, so you can walk into Navratri confident, festival-ready and excited to join the circle.

This October, our Garba workshops are coming to ten locations across London and the South East. Here’s everything you need to know.

Why learn Garba before Navratri?

Garba is more than a dance. It’s a celebration of devotion, community and joy, traditionally performed in circles around a lamp or image of the Goddess during the nine nights of Navratri. The circle itself represents the cycle of life, and dancing together is a way of honouring the divine feminine energy that Navratri celebrates.

At a busy Garba night, the music is fast, the circle keeps moving and the steps change as the rhythm builds. If you don’t know the basics, it’s easy to feel lost. If you do, it’s one of the most joyful experiences of the year.

A short workshop before the festival gives you:

  • The core steps used at most UK Garba nights
  • Practice moving in rhythm with the circle
  • The confidence to join in rather than watch from the side
  • A fun night out with friends or family before the big celebrations begin

Garba for beginners: no experience needed

Our workshops are built for complete beginners. You don’t need any previous Garba or dance experience, just bring your energy.

We break each step down slowly, then build it back up to the music. By the end of the session, you’ll be dancing full sequences with the group. If you already love Garba, you’ll still pick up fresh styling, new combinations and a proper workout.

Come on your own, bring your friends or make it a family plan. Garba is for every age, and some of our happiest moments are seeing grandparents, parents and children dancing side by side.

What to wear to a Garba workshop

This is a festival, so dress for it! We’d love the whole room to look festive.

  • Outfit: Wear your best colourful Garba or Navratri outfit, such as a chaniya choli, kediyu or kurta. Bright colours, mirror work and embroidery are all welcome.
  • Footwear: Choose comfortable shoes you can dance in. You’ll be moving a lot.
  • Water bottle: Garba is a workout, so stay hydrated.

Not sure about a traditional outfit? Comfortable clothes in bright colours are perfectly fine. The most important thing is that you can move freely.

How the workshop works

  1. Arrive 10–15 minutes early so we can check everyone in and start on time.
  2. Warm up with the group to get your body ready.
  3. Learn the steps one at a time, broken down slowly.
  4. Put it together with music and dance in the circle.
  5. Leave festival-ready and excited for Navratri.

Important for existing Step2Step students

If you’re already a Step2Step student, you do not need to buy a ticket. The Garba workshop is included in your regular class, so simply attend your usual class as normal.

Tickets are only needed for guests and non-Step2Step students.
